InactiveIt depends!
If you are using the website for search engine optimization and just having your visitors come once, then the .net is good.
Should you count on repeat visitors, I would search for another .com, as a lot of people can remember the domain, but simply type .com as the extension.December 7, 2005 at 1:10 pm #678024
vladcizsolMemberI agree with Burgi. .net is fine for SEO purposes, its just not as good for type in’s or returning visitors who do tend to make everything .com

InactiveAgree with the above comments. I would though find a domain name which is available on .com .net .org and specific country TLD’s and then register them all. Work on the .com and either park the rest or utilise them to help with your offsite seo strategy.

InactiveI would say in this instance no. If you build a succesful site on a .net, you are handing the owner of the .com a chance to develop something along similar lines and hijack your traffic, or at best, market their site to compete directly with yours.
That said, this is probably more relevent with a brandable name. If its something like “onlinecasino.uk.net” as in my sig, its less relevant as the name is not one that will encourage loyalty through its lack of obvious branding effectiveness. If however its something more easily memorable like pokerstars.net, then without the .com, i would be more inclined to sell it on and buy a memorable “.com”.
If the name is just for SERPs purposes, then it matters less if its .com or .net, but you are still opening the door for a potential competitor to use your hard work to steal your traffic, especially as these two extensions will be competing for the same regional SERPS. Aside from which, the days when keyword-stuffed domain names being so important are definately starting to recede IMHO.
Cheers
Simmo!

InactiveThanks for the thoughts guys. I found a pretty good .com one. It’s not exactly the one i wanted but it’s pretty close. I can’t really afford to be registering a bunch of different extensions at this point, so I’ll just get to work building it and worry about that later. I think I’m gonna try to build this one myself so I’m not beholden to the whims of my web designer and his current state of motivation (or lack thereof).
