vladcizsolMemberThe question might be would Google not wish to chance prosecution so they modify their algorythems to avoid a confrontation?
Did Google drop Gambling Ads from their Adsense program or did they wait until the Government attempted prosecution?
Did Google modify their search returns voluntarily to appease the Chinese government?

InactiveI would have to say no U.S court can govern what Google decides to do internationally. They may have the authority within their own state beyong that they can’t enforce anything. Just a thought.

Very true. Were there not hundreds of prosecutors in the past who didn´t shy away from ridiculing themselves?

InactiveEmagine for a moment you have invested large sums of cash into Google. Why? because they are one of the largest search engines around. They supply surfers with vast amounts of information. To limit or censor Google Via the U.S government as an investor I would sell off my shares.
Google I speculate will be challenging the current events. They stand to lose millions.

I wish i could agree with you Greek – but i don’t see why google would take a stand to defend gambling from being censored… they didn’t when it came to adwords why take a stand on organic seo (if pushed) since they don’t even make any money from it?
i also fail to see why as a typical investor you would care if google censored gambling sites from their index since it’s not going to impact their bottom line
again i wish i could agree with you :unhappy:

InactiveI am still digesting the recent events so bare with me for a moment. People invest in Google for what? because it is the biggest and according to some the best. The best at what? people can find virtually anything on Google.
Now theoritically if Google starts decreasing its’ search results people will end up going elsewhere. Therefore this would decrease the value of Google. This provides a perfect opportunity for say ask.com too jump right in and take over the number one spot if Google continues on censoring.
The possible outcome could very well be Google could face some harsh stock devaluation for taking any action. So in theory Google could blow itself off.
Also if the investors where so concernned about the moral stance of Google why do we still find offensive sites. Investors want Google to remain number one regardless of the content it provides.
There will always be a SE to replace Google’s dominance. Just a thought at the moment there are many things I am looking over.

all fine if you assume that:
A) google is the only SE the US government is going to get to filter out gambling content
gambling users are such a large proportion of internet traffic that it will signifcantly damage google’s user base.C) investors care more about the day to day operations at google then the share price & the company’s profitability
again i wish i could agree with you – but i think it’s VERY WISHFUL THINKING

InactiveHi all,
Thanks for all the great posts – I haven’t been in here for a little while but as soon as I had digested as much as I could I came here to see some more ‘sensible’ things and I’ve not been disappointed so far.
I (at least so far and maybe now never) advertised on google, but relied on the pure SEO stuff and well luckily (and maybe 1% strategically lol) gotten fair results and relied a lot more on word of mouth (or word of e-mouth lol) which may be the way everyone might have to go.
Anyway, getting back to my subject point, which I’m sure is just an echo already – if governments start edging away at the internet for particular areas, the internet won’t really be the ‘true essence of the internet’ any more – more like “country intranets”.
I was also looking for a ‘what can you/I do to help’ (if anything) – I’m based on the UK (everything), but have a majority US membership base and whilst I can’t petition against it in the US, if there’s anything I can do, or I can ask our members on the forum to post/petition at, I’d be most grateful for any information anyone has.
One of our members posted a link in our forum to a petition which I’m hoping I’m ok to post here, and perhaps those in the US might want to take a peek / participate in. It’s been made a global topic at the forum, but if I can make it more useful I’d be very grateful and more than willing to do what I can for US gamblers and for the industry as a whole of course as I’m also quite worried that we might follow suit.
Ok. I’ve babbled enough = here’s the link to the petition.

Hopefully Happy Gaming in the future
