I employ people, and two have complete server access now for a while.

It is a very tricky situation and you need to tread carefully.

Once I hired someone from elance (Ravi Shanker, he runs around at other freelance places with similair names and even has the nerve to cite http://www.virtualgamingconference.com and http://www.casinos2bet.com as references. Stay away, far away from this crook!

He is from India and contracted with a bunch of programmers. I had them work on the two above sites. Apparently Ravi did not pay his people or had some sort of dispute with them, and they went into my properties and destroyed all the backend stuff. I have only just started to resurrect virtual gaming and casinos2bet is still in ruins.

He just stopped all communications and that was that. I even had a person I knew in India go to see him and there was just nothing to be done – he refused to fix things.

So, giving anyone complete access to any of your sites puts you at risk. You better know and trust the people.

It’s even worse here in New Zealand …

All sorts of rules and regulations, social security taxes, huge sick leave provisions, occupational health and compliance, enforced parental leave (that the EMPLOYER MUST PAY), impossiblity of dismissal.

We have a “left of centre” government that seems determined to ram through a whole raft of social engineering changes – complete with the rapid growth of a beauracracy … and most of the costs seems to have been levied upon the employer …

Seriously … I don’t ever see myself employing anyone in New Zealand except on rigidly defined contract work. The compliance costs are a killer !!

    Stay solo .. you’ll be happier !!

Mark, if possible try and do it as a contracting arrangement because it may be less onerous than employing people. Can’t speak for US law but here you don’t have to worry as much with employee obligations and the associated costs such as workers compensaton insurance, payroll tax, retirement benefits and leave pay. Of course the other benefit is that it is for a set amount of time as well. If they don’t work out then you can either pay them out or just wait until the end of the contract. Much easier than dealing with the crap of getting rid of some-one.

If you don’t treat your contractors fairly though they can walk at the end of the time and you are back at square one. Nothing is easy when you have people working for you, be it employees or contractors. That said, you can achieve so much more when you have people working for you so it can be worth it but there is a price to pay for it.

I refuse to hire anyone in my country due to the paperwork and associated tax nightmare. I would recommend you try and find someone out of the country to avoid all of that garbage.

Otherwise, all i can say is that it’s very difficult finding anyone who is honest and productive.

Oh, I took the contracting status as a given. You don’t tell the person when, where and how to do the job, they are responsible for that.

I have recruited here, there are always some good people who have skills I am looking for and who appreciate the experience. I have also recruited players with good outcome. It’s good to have someone who knows the industry.

I have been lucky lately. Great people, no headaches. It hasn’t always been that way. I am quite motivated to keep the status quo now.

I know one thing, I do plan on setting it up as contract work. I wont actually “hire” anyone. I will do it like all the sales jobs I have ever had :)
I am bothered by the fact that I have to give someone access to things and the next part would be stealing the ideas I give to them to work on and then them starting their own website. We are talking years of knowledge that I really dont want to just GIVE away. So how do I go about this end of things as well? I have been working on this for over a year now and yes thats sad. Now I am just ready to get it going though and there are a few questions I found myself asking…
How safe is elance really? I have a few people from the local school that I am giving the jobs to. I also had an interested member so a big part of this is taken care of as far as finding the people. Its now protecting myself and making sure they are happy as well.

    Elance is completely unsafe.

Players are good to work with – they have insight and input and aren’t interested in stealing your ideas.
