….or users will use Bing or Yahoo instead as the mother of all searches – Google – is apparantly very ill and old.

in my view Google is becoming a hoax, not showing the relevant searches but sold ads instead.

This isn’t a penguin thing. News sites and content sites were favoured before this update

Here’s an interesting search query to run (especially if you see this post within the next 48 hours or so).

Go to Google and enter “Belmont Stakes betting”, a popular keyword given the race just hours ago (June 9, 2012).

In years past, any kind of search with “betting” tagged on the end usually produced either sportsbook web pages or affiliate sites. Now, Google seems to be choking on newsy article style websites, some that do not really offer any sort of “Belmont Stakes betting”, making them essentially irrelevant results for that query on race day (this observation is in addition to the news article mini-results that get posted after the first 3 organic results).

I’m seeing the New York Times at the top of the pile, followed by a few sports talk websites, and even Forbes magazine. I also recall seeing the Huffington Post listed prominently on Kentucky Derby day, and they sure as sh*t don’t offer gambling ads on their site.

    Conclusions:

    1. This could be a stab at putting content first, but copious amounts of articles from authority pages aren’t always the most relevant results. If articles are the way to go hold onto your hats because a hurricane of article production is about to begin.

    2. Google is still tweaking Penguin 1.0, 1.1, or whatever the version is at this point. My guess is these types of results will drop away within the next month or so. Imagine entering “NFL betting” in September and having to dig through Time magazine, NBC sports news, etc. NONE of those results benefit the user looking to place a bet.

    3. If Google now prefers websites the “the latest news” type of content, the competition among affiliates will not be about SEO per se, but more so about creating a great news source and trying to earn Google’s trust so that one’s website pages get listed at the most important time-sensitive moments.

    Good luck to all!

    Hi Jax Casinos:

Thank you so much for sharing this update and all of your findings. All super informative and helpful.

By any chance, could this change be occurring due to the Google Fresh algorithm update (also known as Google caffeine?) Here’s some info: Google Fresh: Genius or Brainless?

At least they have a small pr1 site in the first page results.
