I’m sure you have already discovered this, but just in case you haven’t look into media queries … you can use css to display pages to mobile devices and you won’t have to do redirects.
I use this on my wordpress sites and have not had any penalty issues.

You can customize it a bit too since it’s also a mobile theme.

i tried this plugin and it was pretty good but i now use wptouch pro, the basic wptouch is pretty good but pro opens up tons of extra custom features including shortcodes which are used to only show certain content to mobile users, which is good for adding cta buttons that arent relevant on the desktop version
