I think that It’s quite neutral bcz It contributes nothing, but does no harm..
But if you get a link back from google

InactiveI see a lot of people doing this too, but I think most of them are doing it because they see other webmasters doing it. You could always test it by adding the link to see if your rankings change as a result.

Is it a good idea I see lots of sites doing this now?

Inactiveseems adding links to very well respected sites is a possible cover for selling links. They assume if you are linking to google / Wikipedia and such your ok.

frankBPMemberI tried it about six months ago, having noticed a lot of established sites doing it. I linked to Google, Yahoo, Dmoz, wikipedia.
Made no difference at all to either PR or rankings.

InactiveIt will not improve your rankings

InactiveI’ve also messed about doing test links to google.
My latest one linked back to the results page url for a given search term. For example if my main keyphrase was “slots”, I would search google for that term, then link to the results page.
Rankings did improve but not sure if that had anything to do with it. Have now taken the links down to see if my results again change.
Too much fun testing these goofy theories/ideas.

InactiveI’ve done some testing related to this too – I’m not convinced that it’s the link to Google that helped you in the situation. It might have been the use of the word “slots” in an outbound link pointing to an external site. It might also have been just the single additional instance of the word “slots” on the page. I’ve seen good results by linking to 5-10 good resources for a keyword phrase and using that phrase in the anchor text for all of the links too.
BTW, nice to see you here Kevin11 – when are you coming to Texas to drink some beer and sing some karaoke with me man?

InactiveLinking to the search page for a related term that you’re optimising for is an old trick that used to help about 7 or 8 years ago. However, the search engines worked out what was going on and I believe discredited any such links a long time ago.

GuestDon’t be hurt Ix, I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed but that one went way over my head?
I am trying to figure out if its a shot at something someone said but I don’t see anything anybody said that would deserve being called stupid.
I’m probably out of context and just missing your point.

Guestsing some karaoke with me man
Excuse me sir, what have you done with my friend Randy … .who’s from TEXAS!
they shoot karaokees don’t they? I know they shoot Okies. and Texans never were much for details. They’re all “big picture”. Okies… karaokies … I’m pretty sure there’s season on both down there.

….. Randy singing. I’ve talked to him on phone several times and I can say that my bet would be he’s either quite good … or quite bad.
either… I’d drive to Texas to see it. Sadly … I haven’t been asked. (insert feel sorry for bb1 smilie here)

My silly rant is meant to show how silly the whole idea of giving Google a link is.
Do people really think that this practice will improve their ranking?
IMO it’s a bit like offering up a sacrifice to appease the Gods.

Guestthanks for the response. my bad. I totally misunderstood.
… I hate this getting older thing. and as I mentioned .. .when you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed to start with …. makes getting older all the much worse.
or no, not getting older.
I think maybe I’m carrying over some feelings of confict I encountered/endured at another forum before coming here. Amazing how a tone can influence how you interpret things for the rest of that day.
I’ve learned a lesson today. Don’t bounce from forum to forum and back again because (at least in my case) tend to carry the moods or the aura of the other forum with me.

Nah, I dont think anyone really beleives it does anything more than what Randy said eariler in this thread.
On the plus side, having a link to a related search may provide some benefit to site visitors… if you can stand directing traffic off to the competition…
