Not counting regional ones, currently there are only three search engines:
Google (powers AOL, Netscape, lots of other stuff)
Yahoo (powers MSN, Alta Vista, CNN, some others)
    Teoma (powers Ask Jeeves)

Nobody knows exact numbers but very roughly the Google group is about two thirds, the Yahoo group about on third, with Ask Jeeves about one or two percent.

So in answer to your MSN question, right now they use yahoo data… although they use only some but not all of Yahoo data. MSN’s new search engine will come out next year sometime (probably).

Are you having trouble with free inclusion?

Lycos insite is offering paid inclusion for some SEs including MSN.

Simon, as Classics says, you need to get some exposure in yahoo! to get into MSN. My experience so far has been to concentrate on the on page optimisation for good results in yahoo! Of course this was totally by accident that I got the few good results as I was concentrating on Google at the time. Go figure…

Are you talking about getting listed in the MSN Search Engine or the MSN Directory? As everyone else said currently Yahoo powers MSN but they are working on their own technology and already have one version online and running.

As for getting listed in the directory are you sure you submitted to the right category’s? My site was listed within a day with no problems. Maybe they are a bit backed up at the moment?

    Thanks for all your advice…

Ideally I want good listings in Google (but that simply is not happenning), so I am now targetting the other engines.

MSN uses Yahoo owned inktomi. The results at yahoo and msn are slightly different, to learn more visit http://www.inktomi.com

You dont have to pay to be listed, paying will throw your money away. Simply exchange links with some sites that are listed in yahoo or msn and the inktomi engine should be able to spider your website. I also find that inktomi is a lot like google but without the head games. There is no sandbox, and unlike google you dont have to spam blogs to get listed high. All that you need is content on your site that reflects the terms that you want to rank well for and a decent amount of backlinks

What prevention methods can we use to avoid being thrown in the sandbox?

Several of my sites have hit the sandbox and several are doing ok. It is like a ricky game of golf with a lot of bunkers and not a lot of fun.
