InactiveI had one fellow who tried to do a home page link exchange with me and had his home page show up as 4 when I clicked on his link in the email that he sent me.
When looking at his home page there was no information or content to warrant a page rank of 4. When I clicked on his home page tab the actual page rank showed and it was a big fat zero.
Just for curiousity I decided to look this website up on Google and when I opened up the website it showed a page rank of zero. Well there are scammers of all kinds to be found on the internet.
Anyway if you don’t check you will never know even on a link exchange if someone is playing you or not. When I exchange links now I always check if they list mine or not.

InactiveThe “related:” command is currenty broken so it wont help you much. The best way is just to use a good page rank checking tool.
But if you will exchange home page links, you should do far more research than just the PR…September 29, 2006 at 5:23 pm #707896Anonymous
InactiveI had no idea you could fake PR & Alexa, very interesting. BTW this link http://www.thelinkinquestion.com/ looks like it is broken. Is it just me. Is there another site to check out PR & possible fraud?

InactiveThis is so interesting, does anyone have an example site that is faking PR? I’d love to check one out.

InactiveThe related: method doesn’t work anymore. Which means you have to check the links:http://www.thesiteyouarechecking.com and verify whether those sites actually do link to the site in question. You should generally click on the “cached” version of the pages. View source and search for your URL in the body of the page.
If find that the sites do not link to the URL – you are very likely looking at spoofed pagerank.

InactiveInteresting post and more fuel to the fire that bartering or buying based on PR alone is a fool’s errand. You definitely need to do more research, just a couple of other simple steps is all that is really needed:
1) Does the site rank top 10 for their full Title. Most sites in this industry have crazy long keyword stuffed Title tags, which actually makes them fairly unique search terms, so a competitive site should show up high on the first page of Google for a full Title search.
2) Does the site rank in the top 100 for any of the keyword phrases they are targeting. Look for 3 word keyphrases that should be easier to rank for.

jackybetMemberYa sorta like the CAP member tufans who was trying to scam people here claiming he had a Legit PR5 Gambling Website for sale. Here is the url “onhelp.net”
It was a fake, free link directory that was turned into some sort of “gambling site”..
Be very careful GUYS!

InactiveJust received an email offering several high PR sites for sale. I won’t bother listing all of them, but will list one as an example www(dot)wssndl(dot)com. The website shows PR4 and uses the title “Party Poker”, but using OpenSiteExplorer to check the backlinks reveals 11 total links, all with the anchor text “Winston-Salem Sunday Night Dart League”
Clearly this is a scam and unfortunately they have already sold several in-content links. So clearly there are many out their only paying for PR and not doing a spec of additional research.
