    The verification words (CAPTCHAs) are fairly easily beatable these days – certainly those used by most forums.

    You could look into replacing it with a harder one, or at least a non-standard one. Spam is a numbers game – the spammers develop automated tools to beat the standard verification methods used on the majority of sites. If your site uses something different, it will not be automatically spammable, and no-one will bother to spam it.

    You could disable links and signatures until they reach a certain posting level. That might dissuade them. Forum spammers are simply wankers though so maybe it won’t be enough.

    Thats why I disable edits and sigs on suspected spammers. I have had assholes do that here at CAP. They post comments that say nothing in a thread then slip back in later and edit their posts and insert spam. Worthless human beings.

    yer, they ARE the scurge of the net.

    It only takes like 5 mins a day to moderate BUT……. its the worst 5 mins of my day and where im most pi$$ed off lol banning 3-4 people a days gets pretty boring
