As of this morning, it’s a different landing page/site. Looks like someone bought their domain, and whomever it is using it for AdSense.

    WTF ????????????????????

Wow! That is crazy. I hope they get this sorted out. Their banners are still working for me, though. I didn’t look at the details, but aren’t they pulling from an adserver on a different domain? I thought they were…

The site is down and the domain expired. If I worked for the parent company I would fire who ever was responsible for not renewing the domain. What a bone headed thing to do.

I am sure they will get it sorted out but its unecessary aggravation.

Well, it works for me now – didnt yesterday.

Anyhow its weird with the adsense thing as no one else can register it for many many weeks, even after its expired(except the original owner)

    Hi,

We’d like to inform you that the problem with the registrar has been resolved and the site is already up and running in certain parts of the world, and should take no longer than 24 hours to propagate completely.

We’d like to thank you for your patience and apologise for any inconvenience.

I personally like all the folks at fortune and i’ve let domains accidently expire. But i’ve got 1 full timer (me) and a few part timers, they have dozens of staff. This is truely amazing that they hadn’t previously paid for next 10 years.

If whoever renewed today, didn’t pay for 10 years………..

Of course i believe the same thing happened at microsoft a number of years ago.

Yes, Microsoft forgot to renew the domain for passport.com, and they screwed up again several years later and allowed hotmail.co.uk to expire.

Here’s the story about the guy that renewed passport.com for microsoft

Normally there is a 30 day grace period after a domain expires during which only the registered owners can renew. During this time frame the registrar/host will often change the dns settings to a page they have specifically setup for this often with the intention of profitting from the traffic. Hence you get adwords, search boxes etc.

Also I think a lot of domain purchases made through a third party/reseller are gobbled up by those sellers just before the grace window closes if they have good traffic value without ever hitting the open market again.
