There are a lot of great free themes and plugins out there – I use wordpress as well and tried a few themes before settling on one. In the end I chose a very customizable blog type theme (not gambling related at all) and am very happy with it. There are plugins that help with SEO as well.

I think its better to have custom templates too. If I could start again, all of my websites would have custom and unique templates. Its worth the extra cost and effort in the long run.
I go the route of getting a standard seo friendly theme, (not the default one) – I then modify it to make look like I want it to, create a title banner. And then I use plugins to further SEO it, and make the content a bit more friendly as well.
