It used to happen to me quite a bit. Now I don’t know if it does, because if they only produce one click I never see it or check it, I confine myself to checking who sends me a bunch of traffic.

I think you are right, they do this to get you to visit.

It looks like you’ve just stumbled upon a new/underground marketing tool. Target people who are obsessed with stats(i’m speaking for myself here) and visit their site from yours. You’ve got me thinking.

This isn’t new. Happened to me a lot 5 years ago.

I really can’t see that doing much good.

We are all affiliates, so likely the site would be similar to our own and I doubt we would be clicking their banners.

    What’s the point?

I doubt Google/MSN/Yahoo cares, especially since they cannot spider most stats programs anyway (because they are behind passwords if you are smart)

kwblue you are thinking small. If you get your link on every stats program for every website on the internet (like spam e-mail style), then you have a few million people that will see your url a day… and you only need a fraction of that ammount of people to convert to make a bundle.

It costs nothing to get a bot to do all the work for you.

Might get a bunch of irate webmasters complaining to your hosting company.

Yes, I suppose… However, I think the conversion rate would not be anywhere near the same. I’m guessing it would be quite a difference.

That was my main point. I can see that you might get an occasional signup this way, but I do not believe it would be very many. Just a guess, though, as I do not try trickery to sign people up.

When looking at my stats recently I have been looking at the ‘refering sites’ section and notice some strange stuff. I notice that I am getting hits from a few porn sites, and other random sites. When I go and visit them to see where the link is, there is none to be found.

It have this problem with one of my health related sites.
    A mystery.

    Thanks Joeyl

I was looking for that information. What they are saying then is that the hit to your site creates a potential backlink for them in the logs. One would then have to ask the host to close all avenues for the spiders to crawl these logs I guess.
