Hi i find best by pagerank or by date submitted as if you do it alphabetically you will find lots of people will put “best” before there title or “A1” like “A1 online casinos” and stuff like that to make sure there in a top position when thats not even there names – i have 1 directory where this happened alot as i have near 10,000 submissions so i changed from alphabetically to pagerank
.but the other 2 have drawbacks also as when your directory is quite full, if its by pagerank or date submitted new website owners wont want to pay a fee if they know they are going to be burried deep within subpages – but i still prefer these two ways – date submitted is prob the most fair.
Thanks for the info. I have mine set up aphabetized with the web user in mind. I give the webmasters the choice that if they reciprocate, their listing will come out on the top even though it would not be in alphabetical order. With a recip, they also get a featured listing.
I also have the ability to edit their submitted listings, so if they add the A1, etc. before their actual name, I change them.
Do you think this is still fair, or should I change my directory to by submission date? If I make changes now, I would probably be in a mess from all the other sites I did recips with as some of them use scripts to check for their links on certain pages.
the way you have it now sound fine then – as with it being a niche directory as opposed to just a general web directory with 100’s of free submissions you will be able to keep on top of it and make adjustment you need
On my affiliate directory it goes by latest but you can browse easily on main page by popularity latest or alphabeticaly.
Plus we allow ppl to submit affiliate links in to get sub affiliates
