InactivemisterDH wrote:ok…. I have some questions about content and how important it is for high rankings…SE = Search Engines
Can SE tell the difference between RSS feeds and uniqe content? If not isnt it better to have a bunch of rss feeds than write content all day?
Yes, they can tell. I am convinced that RSS doesn’t count the same. If they don’t make the distinction yet, they will soon.
Quote:Will SE know if I use my own uniqe content over and over again? E.g. if I add an article to the mainpage, and replace it a month later… then go back to the old one, will they know? Or do they think I have had 3 updates? You wouldn’t find me messing with that – too risky.
Quote:How often shuld I update my site with new content? 1 a day? 10 a day? every minute? Whats better? Will SE “smell something fishy” if my site is updated with new uniqe content every minute or second? You will get different answers to that, ranging from “never” to “constantly”.
Quote:What is “too much”? Can I have 100 “pages” of uniqe content on one page, or will the SE think its spam or something?I have over 3000 pages on my site. BUT – google likes to see NATURAL growth, a little at a time. My site has been under construction for going on 6 years.

InactiveIt is better to write your own content or hire somone to write it for you. Content is very important, especially if its unique as in different. When updating content I found its best to update portions of it. Leave the important content intact such as the beginning of your page. Content for each page should be unique to a certain degree from other pages.
Everytime you make a change to your site it is considered an update. I would suggest a slow and steady approach for updating. Taking small steps is better than giant leaps. Give the SE time to digest the information.
Contrary to most webmasters I would shy away from rss feeds for security reasons mostly.
Updating daily in small amounts I found has no ill affects. A big topic to be discussed. greek39

InactiveOn your site, your own uniquely created content is better.
Your rotating content idea will kinda work as well. In the sense that you are changing the content of at least one page, then the search engine spiders are likely to revisit more frequently.
It won’t help you rank higher unless you have optimized content for them to get their teeth into, though. But getting the spiders back every day or so has value in itself.

InactiveIn my opinion, the approach you are taking is wrong from the very get-go.
You don’t get good, consistent ranking by trying to outsmart the engines. They ALWAYS catch up to you, and you are in for a life time of tweaking and worrying and changing your approach and learning more SEO and basically working your butt off outsmarting the likes of businesses the size of google et al.
If you get your kicks that way, fine.
If you are aiming for a solid business that makes good money in the long run without all that worry all the time, spend your time figuring out what they want and do that.
It ain’t smart to try to outsmart those who you depend on for a living. They will forever have the upper hand. Just please them, it’s cheaper, easier, and a lot more successful in the long run.

InactiveI kinda agree with Dom, but I don’t think misterDH was trying to game the engines or outsmart them. I think he was just asking a reasonable question.
My own view is that getting search engine spiders to revist your site on a regular basis is pretty easy. I also think that coming out of the box with a site of 100, 1000, even 10,000 new pages isn’t going to trip a filter.
Just create a good site, take care of it, and get lots of links (particularly deep links) to worthwhile content and you are on the road to success.
