CNN wrote:The Internet gambling provision tackles the difficult task of enforcing bans by prohibiting players from using credit cards, checks and electronic fund transfers to settle their online wagers. The measure’s supporters include the National Football League as well as conservative and antigambling groups. Some banking groups have lobbied against it.
Federal officials have made recent arrests involving offshore companies operating Internet gambling sites. The Internet gambling industry is headquartered almost entirely outside the United States, although many of its customers live in the U.S.
Okay… Uh… This is the first time I’ve heard that the NFL supports the legislation. WTF is that – does anyone have any further details about that connection?

InactiveThe NFL has always supported any type of legislation, whether federal or local, that prohibits sports betting. This is nothing new and goes back many, many decades.
The NFL has the old school view that sports betting taints the game. The NFL is afraid that underworld gamblers will pay off players to throw games. The NFL is also afraid that advertisers, fans etc. will think the games have been rigged in some way as long as there are legal ways to bet on games.
Of course, with the salaries players make these days, such notions are ridiculous. But in the past, when players and coaches did not receive equitable shares in the profits, the possibility of players throwing games for money was a real possibility.

InactiveYour post points out another problem with this industry. And I do not mean this is be a personal slight against you Dave.
However, the newcomers (online casinos and affiliates) to the gambling industry are very naive about how this industry must navigate the U.S. political landscape and culture. That you did not know about the NFL’s position on sportbetting is just one example of the this lack of knowledge and experience.
Really this naiveté is the reason so many of us are in the position we are in. It is the reason the current bill was passed and signed.
Online casinos & affiliates simply do not understand how power works in the U.S. therefore they did not take the necessary measures to sustain the industry. In other words, the industry did not educate itself and did not play hard ball.
And now, the day of reckoning has come. The industry has itself to blame.

Voting Republican or not voting Republican will do and would have done nothing in the long run to prevent the situation from ending up exactly where it is today.

InactiveIf it takes the loss of some rights such as online gambling and the loss of all my income to get people not to vote republican, then I feel it was worth it. Too many people around the world are dying to make a few corporations rich.
