GeoffreyMeMemberi think there is a lot of confusion surrounding this
As I understand it, here in melbourne, we have two separate issues that are being reported together and somehow mixing things up
We have had a push the past few years for a internet filtering system to protect our kids as there has been a number of reports of pedophiles stalking kids, as well as wanting a system where parents can monitor kids internet surfing.
at the same time, we have alot of publicy surrounding the effect of all the pokie machines in clubs and hotels, and the amount of money being lost by pensioners etc on them, so there is alot of talk in our parliments how to address that
that is the extent of all these articles recently. I can say with a large amount of confidence, internet gambling/sportsbetting, is not on any agenda to restrict.
In fact, only recently , two weeks ago has victoria approved bookmakers, predominantly ones with internet representation, to be able to advertise in newspapers etc.
cheers

Hey mate, i’m going to add a little here..
One of the pollies (thats Aussie for Politician for you non aussies) is trying to push a law that censors online gaming sites through the national filter plan.. I’ve been reading a lot about this recently. His name is Nick Xenophone (member in SA).. He actually also wants to ban pokies in clubs too (for non aussies, a pokie is a slot machine). They are also trying to push it through to censor sites about anorexia and euthanasia (which I think is bullshit – why censor helpful, informative sites?!).
The internet filter plan was on our good old buddy Krudds agenda.. that was one of his promises if he was elected – another reason why I am proud to say I didn’t vote for him… GRRRR
So to recap, lets just filter out a site about anorexia that could help save a young girl or boys life.. Seems pretty smart to me… :sarcasm:

InactiveDutch (Renee) is correct.
I’d like add my 2 cents to the whole shamozzle as well.
Gambling is a part of the Australian lifestyle, you only need to look at the Melbourne Cup, where everyone pretty much gets involved to bet on the horses. You will always have people pushing for the inverse of what is the corrent norm. But I do get the feeling that in Australia, its easier and quicker to make changes to internet legislation and laws then most other countries.
Slot machines appear everywhere in Australia, pubs, bars, sports clubs, casinos. The government is trying to limit the number of slot machines, and their availability. The thinking is, that the elderly spend their government allowances on the slot machines. (which is probably true). I believe one state has already brought in rules to decrease the number of slot machines. It may have a flow on effect to internet casinos – as users will find another place to gamble their money.
The internet filter implemtation, is really going to be a tough one. Some countries already do this (Singapore). But once implemented, the infrastructure is there to block access to pretty much anything.
To take this to another level, what it will also allow, is a vehicle for Music Companies, and Movie Companies to call on the government for information regarding what is being downloaded, and take legal action against those users (Singapore again – particularly with Manga)
