Norton sucks…all my computers use McAfee and I find it way better than Norton.
I use AVG free, and I am very happy with it
I use McAfee and have for a long time. I am happy with it.
Norton always messes up my email.
Get rid of Norton, it is a memory hog. AVG is a great virus program for free but NOD 32 is definitely the best if you don’t mind a small fee.
Also, you should use a router. This will act as a firewall. You can also use the built in firewall in Windows XP which drains very little.
Run Spybot and Ad Aware once a week. Both are free at download.com
But the 2 most important things you can do to protect yourself are
1. Do not use Internet Explorer, use Firefox.
2. Do not use an administrator account in Windows. Create a new user account that is restricted. This way if you do get hit with something it can’t install itself because the account does not have administrative privelages.
Personally I have found Norton to be better on the virus side of things, and mcafee much better with email and security (soft firewall)
Mcafee will prompt you if you want a program to be installed / run / access the net etc and remember your choice.
If you are paranoid like me, you get a BIG computer and you run the lot plus some anti spyware and anti malware stuff.

Norton sucks big time unless you spend the time to configure it properly. NOD32 is by far the best on the market and is very user friendly.
For antivirus programs I use three all configured diffently. I use Nod32(must pay no getting around that), Zone Alarm (paid version, very aggressive and is very similiar to Norton) and, AVG free editon (can’t lose on this one). Configuring them all to operate as one unit was a bit tricky as too not crash your PC.
But there is a fine line between between viruses and spyware. For spyware I run, Xoftspy, ad-ware se personal and spybot search and destroy. Each provide a different level of security.
For attacks I mostly rely on Zone Alarm and kaspersky Anti Hacking. Kaspersky is very good for repulsing attacks, also it will log the origin of the attack.
Also some common sense goes along way. I never have anything set to automatically update. This also includes MS OS auto updates these thing should be done manually.
In a nutshell dump Norton and use AVG free edtion with the spyware programs I have already mentioned. For port attacks I would go with Kaspersky Anti Hacking (they have a trial editon).

I use the free version of Zone Alarm for a firewall and the free version of AVS for viruses. This combination has proven the most effective. Nortel firewall is a pain in the ass. The only nortel program that I ever found slightly useful was windoctor.
I use F-Prot for antivirus, it’s from Iceland and has been around since at least 1994. Additionally, the owner of the company is one of the leading security experts used by US and European governments.
