InactiveI don’t mind having things presented to me.
If I am not interested, I don’t answer.
Letters that obviously came from someone who took the time to look at the site are usually read, blind mails that are obvious cookie cutter products go mostly in the trash and after that mail from that sender is usually just ignored.
I do keep a folder where I keep mails from places that got a “maybe later” in my mind, and when space opens up, I do look at that folder.
We also have to keep in mind that we are a group of people with very different cultural backgrounds. Some cultures for instance consider “haggling” a normal part of daily life, others take or leave an offer and are done with it. What can be considered “friendly” in one culture, is “intrusion into privacy” elsewhere. What may be “polite and proper” in one place is “cold” in another. And so on and so on.
So if you say “no” but also point out some things about the program, it may be considered an invitation to negotiate by the other party.
Of course this is assuming that some personal contact has been made.
Indiscriminate mailings are still spam. I hate reading “I have come across your website and find it very interesting” and then the mail goes on to sell something (link exchanges, aff programs etc). If you have actually been to my website, I think you have something more to say about it. Don’t lie with the first sentence (or any other).
If someone obviously has looked the site over, and writes about a concrete offer presenting facts, even if I am not interested and don’t reply now, I may get back to it at a later date.

I try to at least have an idea on how I would like to work together, and which placements on the affiliate site I think would suit before starting a conversation.

InactiveI understand that affiliate programs need to grow and in order to do that they need to contact affiliates.
It is ok with a first time e-mail (and please don’t copy and paste a pre-written sales message, I get lots of like that each day, make yours stand out of the crowd). But in my opinion if affiliate programs don’t get an answer, then they shouldn’t continue with other bombarding emails.
Even if a program is brand new but very very good for affiliates and players too, it can gain big exposure in the affiliate world just by word-of-mouth (i.e. in posts here on CAP or other forums) and there is nothing better than affiliates endorsing a program (see Absolute Slots). Remember, there are threads almost every day popping up like “What is the best MG, RTG, Rival, Playtech etc… casinos? My choice of promoting a new program mostly based on these threads (and after choosing one of course I check them out in various ways – AGD, other forums, etc).
And another example: if the affiliate program reps are pro-active in these forums (CAP, GPWA), and show industry knowledge, and they are honest then affiliates will get in touch with the program directly. It happened to me with Paddypower for example, I saw Paddy’s reps all over this forum, their green logo appeared almost in every thread, and I mentioned it in one of them. Then I got a PM from them, but not with the typical sales pitch, just a “thank you” PM. Since then I am with a great relationship with Paddy, and I will endorse them (despite their not-so-good-but-average stats system LOL) and I know that I can contact them any time about anything (last time we talked about my cat – weird lol, but business is not everything). Affiliate managers just need to think out of the box some times.
Oh, and other thing, I don’t know other affiliates are doing this or not. First I usually sign up as a player with the program and I don’t make any deposits. If I don’t get an e-mail within 2 weeks about promotions, or questions about what kind of assistance I need to deposit then I will think hard about not promoting the program. Lots of players are undecided and need help, and these kind of reassuring follow-ups can make them deposit. (Virgin Bingo made this kind of email in a superb way – kudos to their retention team

Hi Shay,
There was a similar thread few months back. It answers your first question – As an affiliate what do you want to know about the program?

InactiveI don’t mind being contacted, and here is what I want to know when someone contacts me.
What software does your casino use?
Does the affiliate mgr and/or casino operator have a history with another group? If so where?
What is the % deal and is there negative carryover?November 10, 2008 at 5:17 pm #786301

That’s a great idea Sipka.
Just so you all know, the same retention team works on all our Bingo products (DailyMail, ChitChat, Castle, Metro Bingo, InterBingo etc.) which you can find on http://www.stminveraffiliates.com
Sorry, couldn’t resist to put a bit of sales msg in here

Yes, that is exactly what I want. If Casino X contacts me and says – management used to be with say 32 Red or Referback that would carry a lot of weight with me. If they say, by the way I used to be with (name your scumbag RTG casino that rips off players money) well that would influence me in another way.
