Did i miss something in the WP story, or did they never explain how the cheaters managed to see the hole cards? I’ve assumed it was a debugging tool that wasn’t removed at release and became known in-house and to at least one outsider.

InactiveThis was scathing to the industry and especially to Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet. What made it worse was that it was the players who did the investigation and brought forth the facts. Here is the link to the article on the 60 Minutes website if you haven’t read it:

vladcizsolMemberI watched the 60 Minutes piece and it clobbered online gambling in general and repeatedly stated that it was illegal and shady. The images of small strip malls in Costa Rica and the small warehouse in Canada made it look like Online Gambling was a shoe string operation despite the fact it generated $18 Billion Dollars a Year.
The Kanawahkee were made to appear as totally incompetant and biased and 60 minutes stated that 60% of all online gaming was transtracted through the tribe. The finishing touch was the reminder that fraud and cheating were likely happening at more poker rooms, perhaps all!!!!
As I guessed it was a VERY negative piece not just on Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet but on our industry as a whole. This sort of sensationalism is what 60 minutes is known for.

k29MemberPrior to joining IA, I was running security at a small poker room. When we heard about the scandal at absolut poker, we were all taken aback that a poker software could make the hole card info of players available in real-time to administrators.
Although i agree that cheating is rampant in online poker, my experience has been that it is usually player vs. player cheating (collusion), this is the only recent case i know of where the site administrators were involved in perpetuating the crime.
I think we need to promote more heavily the auditing that legitimate casinos have performed on their software.
Here is the blog we looked at when analyzing the situation.
http://www.absolutepokercheats.com-a.googlepages.com/graphs&chartsI find it’s so great that the players themselves banded together to expose the scam.
