I have heard of affiliates being banned in the search engines regarding a submission to Google Adword. This is normally done after they view your site and it is unsuitable, political or another reason to be listed in google. When you are using Google Adword/sense you have a human visitor/employee of google viewing your site and sometimes they will raise a concern of your site and get it sandboxed, un-indexed or simply deleted.
These are unrelated incidents though and you just fast tracked your site by a human editor viewing your site. Remember you can appeal this if you feel your site has not violated any of googles t&c’s and generally win.
