a more difficult question is, what happens if they click on another affiliate-link next day?
Basically, in most affiliate programs the most recently visited affiliate site gets credit for the sale. (coined return days and is one of the things to consider when deciding to join an affiliate program).
For example, with the poster affiliate program I’m in the return days is 10 days. If the potential buyer purchases something within the 10 days and does not click on another affiliates link to do it, (they can even visit the poster site directly and the site would read the cookie and track it to me) I’d get the comission.
Cookie duration varies for program to program, for instance Brightshare has a 10 year cookie.
