I think that you’re buying to the “spin” that Google put out about the complexity of their indexes … and their algo …

The reality has always seemed to me that only about half of their matches are good anyway – and that a rapid network of spammed links to a target site has always resulted in short term gain.
There is almost no manual intervention in these listings – and common sense (for a human) is almost impossible to replicate in the SE results it seems.
Google are GREAT at spin doctoring, great at marketting, and pretty good at putting a bot together … but as for making sense of the net out there … no I don’t really think so.
Of course Google do not really care – they’re an advertising business now – all they want to do is sell ad-words … any way they can !!
