The US Department of Justice has, in the past, shutdown websites that they deemed to be violating us laws. Sites that hosted bit torrent trackers, or sold mod chips for xbox and playstation games have been shutdown and had their domains seized.
Remember, the domain name system’s root server is located in Virginia so they can and have already demonstrated that they will do whatever the hell they want to do.
