Yep that sounds like one of my rants …
:roflmao:
But basically I’d expect every affiliate program to be using cookies – and if they’re not then you as an affiliate are getting a raw deal because it will probably mean that visitors had to convert directly of a lick from your website in order to count.
But what gripes me is the appratent failure of cookies at some site – when really it is a simple process. Eg if you use the always stay logged in feature here – it’s a cookie.
In answer to some of your questions :
– which programs use them?
All i hope – otherwise I would not use that program.
– can cookies been overwritten?
Yes they can – by the company – and it will according to company policy as to when they are. E.g is it the first affiliate or last affiliate that gets credit for the customer?
Annoyingly though – many anti spyware programs also give options to remove cookies as does IE itself (Tools : InterNet Options : Deletee Cookies) . When a cookie is deleted this way then your future claim to the customer is gone.
– what when u use them in an iframe?
Should not matter – the page will write a cookie to the computer.
– when do they expire?
That’s up to thr company – I’;ve seen terms from 30 days to a year in their contracts.
– what if a player changes computers?
New computer = no cookie = no payment.
– is the cookie installed when the software is both downloaded and installed, or by merely visiting a page?
I’d hope it was installed on a visit of a page – and the downloading of software would mean that the customer was now considered yours …
(well I’d hope).
:shhh:
