There are no issues with using tables and SEO. Page load is insignificantly slower if tables are used, so insignificant that the average 56k dial-up user wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. In fact, just about every site on the web uses tables for structuring their layout. How exactly do you design a site if there are no tables?
Maybe you are referring to the use of frames. Those are definitely bad for SEO and can hurt usability in general.
