First, I am so glad that you are still alive and recovered, and that the guy is getting the slammer for a year…

But, you think YOUR justice system sux?

This is what would have happened in sunny SA.
You would have waited for the cops for an hour, and an ambulance for at least 20-30 mins if you are lucky. Oh, if on a weekend, double that.

After getting patched up, you would have to go to the police station yourself, or wait a day or so for a detective. You would have had to hang around in the charge office for another hour, where some incompetent officer tried to write your statement down, spelling and grammar mistakes everywhere.
Then, you would be sent on your merry way, because the chap managed to walk away and no-one would want to be a witness.

You would be very lucky if he was caught, and even luckier to spend no less than 2 full days waiting in the courts for the case to come before a judge.
In the meantime, an incompetent officer who took your statement will probably lose part or all of your file. Then the prosecutor, who is underpaid, doesn’t really care too much about your case, will probably not oppose a bail of something equivelant to $20.
And, if you are REALLY lucky, the guy will pitch up in court. If he isn’t there, they will not tell you and you can write off a few days sitting around waiting.

This whole process has taken three months so far.

And, if convicted, the slap on the wrist for a first time offence, with a fine of say $500, and the fine suspended for three years etc.

I think you guys have it too good! I am amazed at how quickly this was sorted out – well done!
