Firstly I dont think this had anything to do with SEO – zero, zilch, nada 
Its more about google ceasing the oppotunity to bring in more monies via highly competitive search terms and adwords! 70% + of the previous top 100 sites for competetive terms have been pushed to the back of the line.
I have information that Google may currently be working on an update … lets cross our fingers that this was just a test gone bad and that we will soon return to the past
