If I had to do it all over again I would have avoided forums completely. As Caseym said they are a pain to maintain at times and very hard to grow. My advice is to create a facebook page and use that as a way for communicating. If you find that you’re getting a huge following, then add a forum. Facebook is killing most online communities.
