We tossed it up for a short period to see what the data says. Just testing it right now.
From my talks with Tim and other experts in the past, I think this kind of stuff does hurt when you have a specific call to action on the page. For example, if you’re a lead-gen landing page and you’re trying to collect e-mails, but have a hello bar that has a different call to action.
Many content sites use these including quicksprout.com and 7 Deadly Sins of Landing Page Design » SitePoint (that’s actually a page about tim ash’s talk). If you wanted to, test a hellobar with a call to action around player incentives such as deposit bonuses, and see what happens. The tool takes 5 minutes to get up, and has full stats.
