I tested the waters and found it worth the effort. I’m in the process of re-engineering most of my sites around the social networks.
I think it is mandatory to at least have social network call to action buttons on any type of content site. I use AddThis – Share Button, Social Bookmark, Sharing Plugins and Analytics which does provide some basic metrics. But intuition tells me that individual call to action buttons are even better. Addthis was originally geared toward social bookmarking but I find 75% of it’s usage is facebook and surprisingly many people use the email feature.
The beauty of the social networking marketing phenomena is that is forcing us to focus on what we should have been focused on in the first place – services and content that people actually want and can use.

Just thought I’d revive this year-old thread, as I’m thinking a lot about integrating social networking into my site, in a way that makes sense.
There’s a few people on Facebook and Twitter who have massive followings, who no doubt are doing well driving traffic to their respective sites.
At the moment, I’m just concentrating on developing good content, and hopefully the traffic, the +1s, Likes and Stumbles will just come as and when…
Are any of you particularly successful using social networking tools to drive visitors to your sites? Is it worth the effort?
