It also occurred to me (before I read these replies) that if one participates in these forums and includes their sites in their signatures, that they are more prone to getting their sites copied/mangled and messed around with – especially if they tick off the wrong people.

Travel is nice, I travel all the time, and that’s why having links as signature can be a wise choice. 
There are many reasons to do so, and it’s up to each person to evaluate the pros and cons.
You shouldn’t let this deter you, this sector is very profitable and since you already have experience in the general affiliate field, perhaps this is a good choice.
Cpays did include the google guidelines in their contest after all, so you should be able to compete honestly.
This is a very competative industry and you may not win anything for some time, but if you learn about who is who and what is what, you can go places.
