I don’t think you’re off topic. It was your topic. :) I do agree with the issues webber brought up as well.

I may have suggested that you don’t have the technical experience to do it. I’m sorry if I was wrong about that. I doubt I’d “out-tech” you in that area.

I still say that you’re better off hosting with a hosting company. Part of what you get in that case is many other people complaining when their own sites go down for any reason whatsoever. So… even if you go on vacation, you don’t really need systems in place to monitor your own sites, and don’t need plans to bring them back up like you would if you’re hosting from home. (not to mention the different reasons why they could go down, and whether you would really have remote access to what might amount to an offline machine.) On an unmanaged dedicated, you need those things. However, they usually come loaded with software that you’d have to install yourself if you do it on a machine at home.

Most ISPs don’t like that set up… might let you do it for awhile, then pull the plug at just the wrong time.
