VIP players do close account. I don’t think any casino will actually close a VIP account, they just lock it so it can be re-opened later and if they have a good retention dept it will be unlocked. Players do this, if they are spending to much or if they think the casino has not been giving them enough bonuses for there losses. Casinos are real good at sending gifts to VIP players when they win big, but they don’t take care of the VIP players as well when they are loosing.
However you should get earnings on the player whether they had it locked or not.
