InactiveI personally have always preferred email and messenger, although I am slowly softening on the phone aspect.
The thing about the phone is that it takes all your attention, you can’t multitask online while talking on the phone. So if the call comes at the wrong time it interrupts everything and is annoying. Also, once your number gets out there you get calls from all kinds of people, some of them pretty pushy, and I sure don’t like being pushed.
It’s really likely a matter of personal preference, and when you do have something like a campaign to discuss, the phone is a lot faster than other ways to communicate.
Once I have moved into the new house (and I am just about to) I will have a phone line just for this. I will likely give the number out to just a few people and see how it goes.

I have to agree with you on this… I personally love speaking with affiliates on the phone because I think it gives you guys a better understanding of our personalities and lets you know we aren’t just a shadow behind a keyboard (at least until you meet us at a conference)… but the multi-tasking definitely comes into it.

biggygMemberwe have always had a phone line just for affilaite managers.Maybe I am just old fashioned and still like the phone .
pps Renee you should really give me notice before you decide to call because of the time difference hahahaJuly 17, 2008 at 4:25 am #772961Anonymous
InactiveMSN and email are convenient, but I do enjoy talking with affiliate managers I have met in person, or who I have worked with for a while. :CallMe:
I like it when affiliate managers ask me first (via MSN for example) if I have time for a call — that’s always nice. I don’t usually answer the phone unless I’m expecting a call, or if I recognize the name on the caller ID. :phone:
I don’t like it when affiliate managers call only to ask for better placement. Those types of calls are probably why so many affiliates provide false phone numbers in their accounts now. People don’t like that direct, pushy sort of approach.
Now watch, Renee will call me later tonight, unannounced, and the first words out of her mouth will be, “Hey affiliate #52093 — how about moving us into your top spots?” :roflmao:
HAH! I kill me….

Yeah like when I was walking on a plane last week and a unexpected and I may add unwanted call came in from a Playtech program. I love to chat on the phone don’t get me wrong but only when I can arrange a time that is convenient for me, other then that msn or skype works great and emails do as well.

I love the phone calls from affiliate managers I am currently working with, because communication is always clearer on the phone then in written words. But just like Engineer said, it’s always nice to get a little warning first. And I also don’t usually answer calls that I’m not expecting and don’t recognize on caller id.

PerThornMemberPersonally, I prefer email rather then anything esle. Contact through email is the best as i can read, and reply at my own discretion, pace and time.
Moreover, with email, One may always refer back to the entire discussion in the event where there is a dispute.
Finally, the worst part about phone calls for me is… I live half way across the world, and when my affiliate managers call, its usually 2-3am in the morning where i’m at.

I agree with Freddy. However, I love the phone too but it can require full concentration

As for a phone call, just ask your AM for a brief summary of what you discussed (main points of course) via email so you both have a transcript of what was talked about :hattip:

InactiveI prefer emails and Instant messenger and AFTER I have some picture about the aff manager and I am asked, we can have a chat on the phone.
Nothing is more annoying than working on something really hard, you have the idea, you just need to write it down for example for an article and then baaaammm, phone rings and takes your attention away.
I have read an interesting article some months ago http://www.thinkvitamin.com/features/webapps/how-to-shut-up-and-get-to-work and then I found another article about interruption during your work can cause you to lose 10-30 more minutes to get back to your work, and I had to realize that the most productive time of my day when I don’t accept any phone calls, I don’t open the IMs, and I keep Outlook untouched.

So I made 2-3 hours of my day like this, it works like a charm

smazk32MemberI would prefer e-mail and MSN/Skype in the beginning of the partnership.
After some time, after you have a good relationship with the manager, I don’t see the phone calls as a problem.
What happened to me once was that after two months in the business I get a call from an affiliate manager asking “where is the traffic, where are the players?”, so I hated it. Now it works with some other programs.

Inactivegood question Renee. I usually try to send an email first to arrange a time as cold calling usually tends to be a short unproductive conversion.
I prefer to meet affiliates in person as it helps to develop a great relationship.

Absolutely! I’d never call an aff without warning UNLESS it was something important like needing another payment method or more info for payment… otherwise I think its courteous to organise a good time to talk..
Unfortunately since our affiliate team is so small I don’t get to go to conferences, so I don’t have the option to meet affs in person… which is why the phone is a little more important for me to build that rapport I guess..

Guestits courteous to organise a good time to talk
agree. Further is my experience … its often better to communicate via written word opposed to face to face because we have trouble understanding accents from one side of the country to another, it gets really tough once you start jumping country to country.
Curious, do you folks down under and in Europe, have as much trouble understanding us … as we do you?
