How do I search to see if my website has a penalty from google or other SE?
February 1, 2006 at 8:19 am #682376AnonymousInactiveMost I can help with is finding out if your site is banned by Google. Use this tool to find out:
http://123promotion.co.uk/tools/googlebanned.phpYou might also want to check your link partners to make sure none of them are banned, that will get you a penalty if you are linking to them.
Other penalties are difficult to detect, leaving you with the option of trying different things and checking to see if they effect your SERPs. If you think you are doing something that is getting you a penalty, stop doing it, then check your SERPs. If they improve in a week or so, then you may have had a penalty. Definitely not an exact science.

Google aside, I don’t think SE’s really penalize a website unless you do something as bad as cloaking, redirects and so on. You could get away with these too. So don’t worry about SE’s removing your site from their directory.
February 1, 2006 at 8:44 am #682382AnonymousInactiveAccording to the software on the site I am not banned. But I just read somewhere that if you search for site:http://www.domain.com (ur url) and u only get one link up means ur banned. When I search for my url i dont get all of the pages just one! the main site, index

If your positions in the search engine results have dropped dramatically, then it is possible that your site has a penalty against it. There are all types of penalties that a site can get.. from a duplicate content penalty, hidden text penalty, etc. Penalties are not permanent. They can last up to 3 months or longer, assuming that you have fixed the problem causing it.
If you look up search terms such as (how long do google penalties last?) in google, you will get a few results. I found this thread about it: http://www.seoforumz.com/forums/article49.htm

You should post your site here and we can give you suggestions on what to do, or what not to do. Then at least you are not guessing. I looked in your profile for the site, but found Nada!

For instance, if you just got a new site listed, you may not have gotten a deep search from their spider yet. Google and other SE’s spider your site differently at different times.
Another possiblity is if you have all of the same names in your title tag. If every page has the same name, SE’s will often only show the one page in it’s results thinking the others are duplicate.
And finally, you should really set up a Google sitemap. http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login This will make certain the Google knows about all of the pages on your site.

I also agree with your other points about Sitemaps and dup-titles throughout the entire site.
There are so many things that could be the “issue” it is best to have something to look at instead of just guessing about the possibilities.

You will notice that your site is listed as #1, which means that once you are out of the sandbox you will be the number 1 site for this search term. Since your site has only been out for 1-2 months, expect another 6-18 months before you achieve the rankings.
February 11, 2006 at 9:35 am #683198AnonymousInactiveEven though with the search term gambling safety ranked as nr. 1-2 i still wont receive good traffic. It seems search engines really put a lot of weight in the domain names.
February 12, 2006 at 8:10 am #683245AnonymousInactiveIn the gambling industry, the domain name means very little to the ranking of the site. This is an ultra-competitive industry, and the sheer number of links going back-and-forth between sites makes the domain a tiny tiny portion of the total algorithm. You are ranking well for “gambling safety” because that isn’t a term that most people are going after. In fact, that term wasn’t searched for at all last month according to Overture and Wordtracker.
February 13, 2006 at 1:50 am #683291AnonymousInactiveAwhile back a friend I was associated with got penalized by google for having more than 100 links on the same page. He added a another page to spread the links out and the penalty he recieved was eventually removed over time.
February 13, 2006 at 10:27 pm #683389AnonymousInactiveWebber286 is right on about the Sandbox penalty you are experiencing. It usually takes 3 – 9 months to get out, in which case it’s a good idea to use your time wisely and begin building links. You can also concentrate on listings on other search engines like Yahoo, MSN or targeted directories if your keywords are good sources of traffic from those places.
You should continue to build content pages. Keep adding articles on your main keyword subjects using unique descriptive titles for each article.
You currently have around 43 pages listed in Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=site:www.gamblingsafety.comYou could bulk that up to about 100 really good content pages and the results would be better for you. Then keep adding content often and make sure to update your homepage.
It’s good you have a site map, but you should list all the pages on the site that you want crawled and use descriptions of each page and link anchor text. You could try submitting a site map to Google site maps if you wanted.
While you are in the Sandbox start building links to your site. Google shows NO links for you right now, and you should try to acquire as many as possible from other sites related to yours. I know it’s hard to do for gambling / affiliate sites, but there are places to get links and linkbait ideas you can use.
Keep adding pages with unique titles, try to keep pages small in file size and under 100 links per page. You could consider adding in RSS or a blog to your site for faster results in Google.
Make sure every page links back to your homepage. I looked for a link back to the home, but didn’t see any on the sub-pages. You may consider adding in hypertext links at the bottom of each page using your keywords in the anchor text of each link.
Webber286 is mostly right about the domain name also. It is highly unlikely that is the reason for lack of rankings or slow start in Google SERP’s. It is one of many factors used to judge importance or popularity of a site in order to show up within page one results.

I have seen many sites close to the top of the first page in Google with well over 100 links on the homepage.
Here’s an example: http://www.seochat.com/ has 155 links on the homepage alone and is 106358 bytes in size. They control many top positions in Google despite the high amount of links and large page size.
I wonder if it wasn’t something else that caused the penalty and then it was also fixed during the site update?
