Pursuant to our last post about exploring opportunities in retail affiliate marketing, we thought we might provide you with some food for thought or perhaps guidance/insight into successful techniques that are being employed in the retail affiliate marketing sector.

Many successful affiliates in the retail sector employ one of the following strategies, among others:

PPC – yes, back to the world of PPC…2 years away but now it’s all wide open again.

E-mail marketing – don’t need to tell you about that one either

Reward/Loyalty sites – these are sites that give their customers/users points to redeem as cash or prizes or discounts each time they make a purchase from their sites. The customers will become loyal visitors as they are attracted by the incentives and good deals offered. Online retailers partner with Reward/Loyalty communities as a strategic customer retention strategy, without having to build custom loyalty programs for their brand offerings.

Coupons – these are sites that negotiate discounts or coupons from merchants and offer them to their users, much like the bonus codes we have in gaming. Similar to the loyalty sites, the coupon sites also have a loyal following as a result of the bargains they offers to their visitors.

Co-registration – these are sites that provide their users incentives in order to get information such as an email address, a zip code, etc. They then provide these leads to merchants who market to them. This strategy is built on large volume leads and developing honest ties with a database of users who don’t mind being marketed to. There are two types of leads that co-registration paths take: host and post and link-outs. Hosted leads typically mean the provider will gather all the lead information along a path, store in their own database and then batchfile leads to an FTP site. Link-out leads tend to be in a co-registration path but then the consumer leaves the path to register on another website.

Once again, these are just some of the successful practices we see, and there are considerations in each of them, however, we hope this will provoke you into evaluating these strategies and assessing which one(s) best suit your strengths.

Regarding industries that do well, this is very relative to certain factors such as your interest, marketing practices, audience, etc. From our experience with Share Results, currently Education and Entertainment are doing very well, as are niche products such as baby furniture, auto parts and customised cards, stamps, mugs, etc.
