Hey Ben,
I have experience in phpBB (in 2010) and am currently using MyBB. Difference is that phpBB is for more experienced users (I was a newbie however) and is less userfriendly in my opinion.
I currently use MyBB on my forex forum | binary options forum and am very happy with it. I took me just minutes to get it online and fill the board with categories and sections and stuff.
My advise is to install them both in a subdomain or subdirectory and to crash test them.
