I think authority is the most important thing with google, and I have always concentrated on that only. Steady as she goes.
Gaining if you like the respect of Google (authority) is of the highest value imo. It’s hard to achieve if your only relying on your site’s on page content. Not impossible but it certainly makes things easier if your part of a linking strategy which hasn’t changed for years.
