My answer here is simple…think about what the word authority means and you have it. I have one site because my authority on the subject shall not be questioned among several sites. To think that people believe that the days of having even whats called an SeO site are not #’d as well. Authorship and authority revolve around honesty and Google is getting smarter and smarter. The big G will find who owns what no matter what shady webmasters do to hide it and spread non-quality content like butter on warm bread. Not pointing this at anyone in particular btw. There is no doubt that focusing efforts on multiple sites is ideal if one could generate that amount of content, but as you guys point out, in today’s era that is a LOT of work.
