Thanks very much for the responses, they all make sense and I am busy making the suggested changes. 
I feel the sign-up process is necessary otherwise I would be overrun with spammers. Those who do sign up can only be a benefit to the site in the long term, plus I get their email addresses. Visitors who don’t wish to sign up will hopefully browse and click on an aff link or two.
