That sounds like a pretty unusual error.
I have a fair bit of experience with WP, do you want to shoot me the URL of the site and I can take a look.
Also, do you have the tag cloud sitting in your menu?
Off hand, I would say it is probably an issue with your theme. The reason I say this is, because your category page should list posts within that category.
