I wish there was one method that was outstanding but I have not found it yet, just plain promoting every which way you can, with quality content and hopefully that will pick up a few quality back-links.

Rod is right you need to all of these to succeed. But if you want to stand out, try to find your niche and research what connects to your end users. Use social media to connect directly to your end users. I have seem affiliates generating leads from facebook, twitter and other social sites. This is cheap and not rocket science. This will keep the books ticking till your site gets optimised and gets organic traffic.
If you read all affiliate forums you will gain tons of knowledge to keep you busy.
