I think banners can be helpful when used in moderation.
Banners DO help brand recognition and can support a content piece that is focused and relevant. Banners can immediately attract the attention of a player if placed in a strategic area.
Obviously, content-based affiliate sites are the way to go nowadays. However, when used in moderation, and when designed well, I am not opposed to placing a visual cue alongside content.
