Obtaining Email lists, and sending out targeted Newsletters is one of the best ways to keep in touch with existing customers, and to help convert new customers (and also to continue to sell existing customers). I strongly suggest using an Autoresponder service (I recommend AWeber) to manage the lists, mailings, etc. It really takes the burden out of doing it. Not sure what technology the OP is referring to.
