unknown caller occurs when the phone companies do not exchange caller ID.
This can happen for two reasons :
(1) The companies do not have a commerical arrangement in place.
This happens in New Zealand with our two main mobile operators. You can call each other on different networks of course – but due to a “spat” about the commerical advantages of caller IDs they don’t switch them between networks.

(2) Phone system incompatiability
Overseas calls to my landline ALWAYS seem to result in the caller ID being exactly “00000” …

With the US being 100 times more complex – I can imagine that it’s one of thse two scenarios …
