.com’s are popular and the default.
Local domain use is growing for local business so thats :
co.uk in the United Kingdom
co.nz in New Zealand
co.ws in Western Samoa (etc)
The one anomoly is actually in Australia – who jumped on the bandwagon quickly so their local domain is :
com.au

However, I don’t really think that it gives you an edge in that market – and by taking a local domain to do tend to alienate anyone not from that country.
