I wrote a request to MoveOn.org to see if they might bring this issue up with their 3,000,000 members. They had a profound effect mobilizing people in the last election. Maybe if more of us write to them they will listen and put the repeal of the UIEGA on their agenda.

Here’s a link to contact them:

Here’s what I wrote:

Hello, I’m not sure exactly how this works, but I’ve been a member of MoveOn.org for awhile now and have come across an issue that is important to me that I think may be important to many other members.

Late last year, just minutes before Congress broke for the recess ahead of their election campaigns, the Republicans attached the UIEGA to the unrelated Port Security Bill. This has created what is commonly referred to as Prohibition II, except this affects online gambling rather than alcohol.

While the tactics used to get the bill passed are unscrupulous enough on their own merit, the reason I am writing is to see if MoveOn.org would be willing to alert their members of this Bill and the fact that there is now a movement underway to repeal this prohibition.

Barny Frank has come out against the Bill and is considering legislation to repeal the UIEGA. However, Senator Frank is only going to pursue this course of action if there is enough public outcry.

Some of the reasons to do this (that I could think of off the top of my head).
– Keep America free…which includes the freedom of choice
– Avoid an EU challenge to the law at the WTO
– Censorship of websites should not be allowed (as proposed in this legislation)
– Reduce the burden this places on the banking industry, keeping them from passing the fees along to their customers
