I also have looked at hostgator and have emailed them a question. I have decided to take that same trek you suggested. I am not unhappy with my hosting but do see where this one would save me some overall money. So hence the interest in switching.
Off line = no money so that is a concern. Also being off line for a prolong period could be devastating. I would make sure new host is up and running before contacting your current host.
(As I type this I get answer to email I sent support in less than an hour. I guess part 1 passed! :colgate: )
