It depends on what you consider similar. xxxword and wordxxx where xxx is another word might not be considered similar its subjective. But say yahoo.com and yawhoo.com those might be too similar.
Establishing yourself as a business using a certain name DOES give you certain rights that those who come after you dont have with regards to operating with that name. Also its not necessary to have a trademark on file in order to claim ownership/copyright of a name etc. again its a matter of establishment.
