It has other added benefits, for example (some people will not like this at all) massive link exchanging will go down since checking tons of sites repeatedly to see that they haven’t added the no follow tag to their links will be a pain in the butt.
At the same time, exchanging links with someone where you both use the no follow tag would be fine.
